2021 Country Carnival
The annual table tennis Country Carnival was held in Murray Bridge again this year (after the 2019
COVID lay-off), on the June long weekend. 4 Port Lincoln players attended; 74 players participated in the
tournament, including 27 A grade men and 12 A grade women.
RESULTS - Teams:
Women’s A: Sally Kunze, Angelika Sederstrom and Serena Fong faced reigning shield holder Murray
Bridge in the first round of the day. Each of us beat the number 3 player; none of us beat the number 1
player: Laurette Norton; and Serena managed to beat their number 2 player: Heather Richards in a hard-
fought 5-game battle. Port Lincoln just pipped Murray Bridge: 5 wins to 4. Port Lincoln also beat Mount
Gambier and Great Southern, to claim the shield. Sally won all her matches against Mount Gambier,
including beating top player Sirinat Sweet. In total, Serena and Sally both won 6 out of 9 matches and
Angelika won 5/9. The team events determine the individual player rankings: Sally was ranked no. 4 out
of the 12 Country Women players and Serena was ranked no. 5. It was great to field a strong women’s
team from Port Lincoln, as we have not won this shield for decades.
Men’s A: Nathan Fong played in a ‘Presidents’ team of 2, rather than a team of 3, (due to a player not
showing up), to give him a chance to rank in the men’s top 10. While he did not achieve a ranking on the
Saturday, he made up for it on the Sunday.
RESULTS – Individual Events:
Nathan Fong beat some very good juniors, on his way to being runner-up to Travis Sweet in the Under 18
Boys singles. Nathan had lots of highlights in the Men’s A singles, beating a number of top level players
to get to the Final, including Dennis Robinson. The final was held between 2019 winner Ben Friedrich
from Whyalla and Nathan Fong. A brilliant match was played: Ben beat Nathan 12:10 in the fifth game.
Nathan Fong’s results: Under 15 boys doubles winner with Rylan Coppin from Riverland; Under 15
singles winner; Under 18 singles runner-up; Mens A singles runner-up.
Serena Fong’s results: no wins or runner-up results on the Sunday but played well on the Saturday to get
Women’s A ranking no. 5.
Sally Kunze’s results: runner up to Laurette Norton in the Women’s Over 40 singles; runner up to
Angelika Sederstrom and Ben Friedrich in the mixed A doubles with Dennis Robinson, in a tough five
game match; + women’s A ranking no. 4.
Angelika Sederstrom played well on the Sunday, combining with Ben Friedrich to beat a number of high
ranking pairs to reach the final, where they out-played Sally & Dennis. Angelika also won the Womens
over 60 singles – beating everyone, including Sally Kunze and Corrie Rawson (who had a very difficult to
play ‘long pimple’ bat), to claim this prize. Angelika also combined with Shane Denman to be runners-up
in the over 40 mixed doubles, going down to Ben Newman and Sirinat Sweet from Mount Gambier.
The Womens A Grade singles was won by Laurette Norton, runner-up: Sirinat Sweet.
The Country Carnival ran very smoothly.
